Forward by Oliver’s Mom on January 31, 2021: Writing my tribute to Rose prompted the desire to find and share the poem Oliver wrote for Grandma Peggy’s funeral when he was just nine years old. Although no one told him he needed to write or say anything after his grandma died, he took it upon himself to write this bit of prose that had been folded and refolded multiple times in his pocket until he shared it. Looking back on that heartbreaking time 12 years ago, I am so grateful for my family’s support and their loving tributes to my mom. Tom gave such a heartfelt eulogy that his brother Bill, an orthodox priest, stepped in when it became overly emotional for all of us. Grace confidently played the flute so beautifully to a full church and Oliver spoke from his heart with words beyond his age as seen below.
The Place that is the Best
By Oliver Neumann, November 30, 2008
Grandma
My heart is always drooping
Since you’ve passed away
But I can always love you
Every single day
Right now you’re up in Heaven
The place that is the best
But down here, your life has closen
Like a little treasure chest
Everyone is sad
It’s a sorrow to have you die
But, God is always watching you
With a faithful eye.
I love you Grandma!
